  • And speaking of March Madness — today is a BIG DAY for college basketball, as the REAL tournament is about to begin.
    .
Student reporter Gray H. is here to tell us all about the NCAA tournament.  Take it away, Gray!
    .
  • GRAY: Hello, sports fans! I’m Gray, and I am MAD for MARCH MADNESS!!! The NCAA College Basketball Tournament, otherwise known as March Madness, kicks-off TODAY – and for millions of hoops fans like me, it’s the most exciting time of the year! March Madness pits the 68 best teams in the country against each other in a winner takes all tournament for National Champion.  There is both a men’s and women’s tournament. Teams are divided into 4 regions and ranked from 1st seed to 16th seed.  But the favorites are not guaranteed to win.

    .
The tournament is always full of Cinderella stories – like in the first round last year when 15th-seed St. Peter’s upset number 2-seed Kentucky and made it all the way to the quarter finals!

    .
The tournament originated in 1939 with just 8 teams – and it was only male players. But over the years, the tournament grew to 16 teams in 1951, 32 teams in 1975, 64 teams in 1985, and reached 68 teams in 2011, which is the format we still use today.

The women’s division was added in 1982, demonstrating the evolution of the sport to include ALL student-athletes — not just the men.
    .
SLIDE In addition to the games themselves, fans also get in on the action by completing their own brackets — and trying to predict which team will win the tournament.  Believe it or not, but in the history of March Madness, no one has EVER gotten a PERFECT bracket. In fact, according to the NCAA, there’s a roughly 1 in quintillion chance of getting it 100-percent right!
    .

    .
Some brackets – like the one run by finance-wizard Warren Buffet  – even have a 1-million dollar jackpot to anyone who beats the odds and gets them all right.

There are a number of championship contenders this year, including number-1 seeds Kansas, Alabama, Houston, and Purdue in the men’s draw; and South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Stanford, and Indiana in the women’s draw.  But it could be ANY of the 68 teams.

I’m picking the Texas Longhorns to take it home.  How about you?
