- Today we will be following the B-Day schedule. That means you’ll be attending periods 2, 4, 5, and 6 — so be sure to double-check that you’ve got the correct books and binders for class. Again, this is a B-Day. See your TA teacher with any questions.
. - Attention all TAs!! Smile for the camera! Over the next few weeks, the WMS Yearbook Staff will be taking TA pictures of the entire school! Here’s the schedule: 8th grade TAs will wrap-up TODAY. And any make-ups or retakes will be scheduled for next week. Yearbook photographers will come to your room to take the picture. Contact Mr. Schonfeld with any questions — and say CHEESE!!
. - Calling all Mathletes! There will be an online “Math Counts” competition next Thursday, February 17th. Contact Mr. Mencarini If you’d like to participate — or with any other questions. Hooray for MATH!!
. - The WMS Gender and Sexuality Alliance is getting T-SHIRTS!! GSA members must place their T-shirt orders by next MONDAY at the latest. Contact Mr. Bell or Ms. Bleakley for more information or with any questions.
. - Calling all Divers and Swimmers! If you’d like to compete in the upcoming season, your physical must be submitted by next FRIDAY. Also, please be aware that there is a NEW VERSION of the online google form that EVERYONE must complete by February 22nd. Once again, even if you’ve turned-in a previous version of the Google Form, there is a NEW one with new questions that everyone must submit. It’s located on the swim page of the WMS website. See Ms. Hogwood with any questions.
. - And now for a “Transportation Tip” about riding the bus. If you’re ever planning to take a bus that’s not your own — like if you’re going to a friend’s house after school — you MUST bring a note from home to the main office NO LATER than your grade level lunch. Again, do NOT wait until the end of the day to get a bus pass — because there isn’t time and you’ll miss the bus! See Ms. Carey in the office with any questions.
. - And now it’s time for WOLF PACK PRIDE! The WMS Wrestling Team got its first victory of the season yesterday — 48 to 36, at home against Thomas Jefferson Middle School.
.
Williamsburg took EIGHT separate matches en route to the win — highlighted by huge battles from Michael H. and Davon H., and a big pin by Jana Y. Way to go, wrestling wolves!! [clap]
. - And finally, February is Black History Month — a time to reflect on the inspiring women and men who helped make this country great. Here’s an interesting fact: you’ve probably heard of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. But did you know that the first African-American woman to win a Grand Slam singles title was actually Althea Gibson, way back in 1956???
.
Gibson is considered the “Jackie Robinson of Women’s Athletics” for helping to break-down the color barriers in professional sports. She won a total of 11 grand slams and was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame. She was also the 1st black woman to compete on the Ladies Pro-Golf Tour, and was named one of Sports Illustrated’s “Top 100 Female Athletes. To learn more about the incredible contributions of African Americans throughout history, be sure to check out our display in the WMS Library!
