___________________________________________________ - GRAY: Welcome to the Weekly Sports Recap!
.
JACK: I’m Jack!
.
GRAY: And I’m Gray!
.
JACK: The FIFA World Cup is underway in Qatar!
.
GRAY: For those of you who don’t know, the World Cup is the biggest soccer – or football – tournament in the world! It’s played just once every four years.
.
JACK: And as the name suggests, the competitors represent countries from around the world. So let’s get into it!
.
GRAY: The tournament began with 32 nations competing in the Group Stage.
.
JACK: Only half of those teams will move on to the next stage: the Round of 16.
.
GRAY: In Group A, the Netherlands ranked first followed by Senegal.
.
JACK: England and the USA were 1st and 2nd in Group B. Group C had Argentina at the top, and Poland got 2nd.
.
GRAY: Reigning champion France won its group, with Australia right behind. Spain and Japan advance from group E.
.
JACK: In Group F, Morocco was on top, followed by Croatia.
.
GRAY: Both Brazil and Portugal have already qualified to advance in their groups, and the final group games will be played later today.
.
JACK: But let’s take a second here and give props to the US men’s national team for advancing this year. Because 4 years ago, they didn’t even make the tournament!!
.
GRAY: The USA earned their place in the Round of 16 by beating Iran 1 to nothing on Tuesday with an amazing goal in the 38th minute from US star Christian Pulisic – who was actually injured on the play and had to go to the hospital! But fortunately, Pulisic is OK and should return for the knockout stage. USA!! USA!!
.
JACK: The Round of 16 is scheduled to kick-off on Saturday. The winners of each match will move on to the next round; but the losers are going home.
.
GRAY: And here are a few big games to watch in the first round this weekend. The USA takes on the Netherlands at 10am tomorrow. Will the Americans stay hot, or will the Dutch cool them off?
.
JACK: And France — the reigning champions of 2018 — are going up against Poland on Sunday. Can the French win back-to-back World Cups?
.
GRAY: Well, that’s a wrap for this week. Make sure to tune in next time for the latest World Cup updates.
.
JACK: Until then — go for the goal, Williamsburg!!
