Community Partnerships and Opportunities

George Mason Early Identification Program

APS Office of Minority Achievement partners with the George Mason Early Identification Program (EIP) to support first generation, college bound middle schoolers. In seventh grade, students become eligible for the program. Students who would be the first in their family to attend college may be nominated by teachers and counselors to apply to the program. Contact Ms. Butler, WMS Minority Achievement Coordinator, for additional information on the nomination process.

STAR Merit Scholarships

Stand Tall And Reach (STAR) is a scholarship available for African American/Black students in APS. The scholarship competition begins in February and it is open to all African American and black 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who meet certain academic criteria. Students compete for various monetary awards through writing essays. Contact your student’s counselor for details.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, Young Scholars Program

The Young Scholars Program is a life-changing scholarship available to high-achieving seventh graders. Please click on the link above for details. Contact Ms. Butler or your student’s counselor for additional information.

Mentoring Program for Girls and Boys in Middle School

NCBW Mentoring Program

African American middle school girls are invited to participate in an awesome mentoring program sponsored by the NOVA Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NCBW). In this program, you will have the chance to build relationships with successful women in our community, take interesting field trips, develop positive habits of mind, and meet other middle school girls in the county.

The NCBW Mentoring Program will provide you with extra support and caring to help nurture you on your journey towards becoming a successful adult. Participants will meet one Saturday each month, from 9am to 12 pm, at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Transportation to Jefferson is NOT provided.

Junior Kappa League Mentoring Program for Boys

This program is for boys 10 -13 years old and sponsored by the Alexandria/Fairfax Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
