  • Today we will be following the B-Day schedule. That means you’ll be attending periods 2, 4, 5, and 6 — so be sure to double-check that you’ve got the correct books and binders for class. Again, this is a B-Day. See your TA teacher with any questions.
    .
  • And now it’s time for WOLF PACK PRIDE!!  The boys Ultimate team split a pair of hard-fought games against HB Woodlawn on Monday. The 8th graders won on the LAST POINT of the match — while the 7th graders came up just shy, losing by three. It was a fantastic effort all the way around.  Way to go, frisbee wolves!! [clap]
    .
Following the split — it’s now time to watch the scoreboard.  WMS is guaranteed AT LEAST a tie for the Ultimate County Championship with HB. However, if HB loses either of their two remaining games this season — the championship will be OURS.  So cross your fingers, everybody, and let’s see what the “sport gods” have in store!
    .
  • Wolf Pack Pride continues with the WMS tennis team — who took off like a ROCKET again Swanson yesterday — taking the match 5 – zero!  Big wins from 6th graders Maxik S. and Matthew K., 7th graders Hailey Y., and Amelia D., and our strong crew of 8th graders Jacklynka S., Matthew H., Eleni G., and Ojas C.. Way to go, tennis wolves!! [clap]
    .
The final match of the regular-season is scheduled for TOMORROW against Dorothy Hamm. And then next week — it’s time for the County Championships:  Doubles on Tuesday, and Singles on Thursday.  Go for the gold, tennis team!!
    .
  • Our final Wolf Pack Pride goes to the girls Soccer team — who got back into the WIN column yesterday with a 1 to zero victory over  our crosstown rivals:  Swanson Middle School.  7th grader Tiffany T. and 8th grader Julia L. combined for the shutout in goal; while 7th grader Katie H. kicked in the game winner with just two minutes left — and she did it on her BIRTHDAY!  Way to go, soccer wolves!! [clap]   The Lady Wolves return to action TOMORROW at home against Jefferson Middle.
    .
  • Cross-over dribble — pump-fake — jump shot — nothing but NET!  The WMS girls Basketball team is getting ready for the new season.  Interested players are encouraged to sign-up by scanning the QR code on the pink flyers posted throughout the school. Tryouts are scheduled for next week — TUESDAY and THURSDAY after school in the gym. And don’t forget — you must have a physical on file to participate. See Mrs. Warden in room 115 with any questions.  Good luck, ballers!!
    .
  • You gotta SPIN it to WIN it!  Girls Ultimate Frisbee gets started with its first practice — NEXT Tuesday after school in the main gym. All players of all skill levels are welcome to join.  Come be part of a fun and successful tradition. See Mr. Smo with any questions.
    .
  • Up next — we have some advice for all you writers out there. Number one — Never, ever use repetitive redundancies. Number 2 — Don’t use no double negatives. And number three — submit your original stories to the Annual PTA Reflections Contest!  This year’s theme is “Look Within.” Pick up a copy of the submission guidelines and an entry form today from the library. The deadline to submit your creation is October 28th.

  • We continue our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month today with a Latin Music Lunchtime Dance party!! The cafeteria will be rockin’ with the sounds of Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, and of course — some New Age Latino music. See if you can guess some of the artists!!
    .
  • Plus — we’ve got a bit of Hispanic Heritage trivia for you!  Pay close attention — and you could win the TRIVIA CONTEST during lunch tomorrow.  Here we go!
    .
First off — Did you know that the terms “Hispanic,” Latino,” and “Spanish” all have different meanings? Hispanic refers to people from Spanish-speaking countries — so for example, Spain and Mexico are Hispanic countries, but Brazil is not — because people there speak Portuguese.  Latino indicates people who come from Latin American countries — which would INCLUDE Brazil… but EXCLUDE Spain.  While Spanish — quite simply — means that they’re literally from Spain.
    .
Did you know that Hispanic Heritage was first observed in 1968? It was instituted by President Lyndon B. Johnson as a week-long celebration.
    .
Did you know that Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th — because on that day in history, FIVE different Latin American countries gained their independence:  Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua!  Plus, Mexico and Chile also commemorate their independence in September.
    .
Did you know that Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the United States? Only English is spoken by more people.
    .
Did you know that people of Hispanic or Latino descent now represent the largest non-white demographic in the U.S?  They represent roughly 17-percent of the entire population — which is over 50 million people!
    .
Did you know that California has the LARGEST Hispanic population in the country — at an estimated 14-plus MILLION people.
    .
And finally — did you know that by the year 2060, most estimates predict that the Hispanic population in the United States could exceed 30-percent of the total — or nearly 100-MILLION people!  There’s no doubt about it — Hispanic heritage IS American heritage.
    .
  • One more thing before we go — we’d just like to welcome you to the Block — that is, to the Block SCHEDULE!
    .
WMS instituted a “block schedule” for all grade-levels this year — and WOLF-TV student-reporters Jack R. and THIS guy, Sam W., say it’s been quite a change for students and teachers alike.  Check it out!
