School Library Month

A robust school library program meets students’ academic needs and personal interests while supporting and integrating with teachers’ instruction. Teaching skills for life-long learning, such as online information literacy is prominent throughout the year. Sharing books that act as “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” designed to foster a life-long love of reading is a daily occurrence. The AASL Integrated Standards Framework of Inquire, Include, Collaborate, Curate, Explore, and Engage, guide the library program at WMS. Some examples of how the framework is incorporated:

  • The WMS Library circulates a diverse collection of reading and listening materials that support student classwork and personal interests.
  • The librarian embeds digital media and information literacy into subject area research lessons.
  • The librarian partners with teachers to create research hubs – webpages that serve as a home base for research projects that may include how-to videos and slideshows.
  • There are collaborative, unstructured activities in the library, including sudoku on the SMARTPanel and Let’s Stick Together collages.
  • Students can interact with the librarian at any time through the library Canvas page to get personalized research support or book recommendations.

The WMS library’s full time assistant is an integral piece of the WMS program. Ms. Scott is the first person students and staff interact with when they come to the library. She makes skilled recommendations for resources and easily connects with students while performing a wide variety of tasks that keep the library running smoothly with an inviting atmosphere and books in students’ hands.
