Arab American Heritage Month

As we welcome the month of April, Arlington Public Schools embraces Arab American Heritage Month. This is a special time to celebrate the rich culture, history and contributions of Arab Americans in our community and across the nation. The Arab world consists of 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including nations like Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Morocco. Arab Americans represent a vibrant and diverse community whose contributions span education, science, business, government, the arts, and public service.

🗓️ On Thu, April 16, the Arlington School Board will recognize Arab American Heritage Month with a video tribute.

More About Arab American Heritage Month 

At APS, we are committed to fostering a community where every student and family feels seen, valued, and respected. Arab American Heritage Month provides an opportunity for students and staff to learn more about traditions, histories, and perspectives that have shaped Arab American experiences. Through classroom learning, school activities, and community engagement, we expect to deepen understanding and appreciation of this important heritage.

It is also important to note that “Arab” refers to a cultural and linguistic identity rather than a race of religion. Arab Americans represent a wide range of religious traditions, ethnic backgrounds, and lived experiences.We encourage our community to take part in learning and reflection this month. Whether by exploring literature, music, history, and art from the Arab world, engaging in classroom discussions, or learning about the achievements of Arab Americans who have helped shape our nation.

This recognition is part of our broader and continuous commitment to affirming all cultures and identities represented in our school community. Throughout the year, and not just during designated months, APS strives to incorporate inclusive perspectives into our curriculum, practices, and celebrations. Our goal is to move beyond the “heroes and holidays” approach and instead embrace a deeper, ongoing engagement with the diverse histories and voices that shape our shared American story.
