*Commemorating 9/11*   A message from our principal, Mr. Boykin:

“Today is September 11th, the seventeenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and here in Arlington at the Pentagon. In commemoration, WMS and schools all over Virginia are raising a “Freedom Flag” on the school flag pole as a symbol of honor and remembrance. As we have our Moment of Silence this morning, I encourage everyone to take some time to think about how each of us can support peace in our school and our community, as well as throughout our nation and the world. ”

  • Brush your hair, wash your face, and smile for the camera, everybody — because this FRIDAY is PICTURE DAY at WMS!! Student photographs will be taken during all PE classes, so be sure to bring your “picture order form” with you. Extras forms are located in the office, or you can download a form from the WMS website. See Ms. Argenal in the main office with any questions. Say cheese!!
    .
  • Calling all bi-lingual 7th and 8th graders!  If you know how to read and write in any language other than English, you should take the “Credit by Exam.” It’s an easy way to earn up to FOUR high school credits. The test is scheduled for November 6th at Wakefield High School — but registration in open NOW.  See your grade-level counselor or a HILT teacher for more information, or to sign-up.
    .
  • Calling all MUNners!  The Williamsburg Model UN Club is preparing for another big year of conferences and debates.  Returning members are invited to the first meeting — this THURSDAY during ASP 1 in room 202.  There’s a lot to discuss and plan — so don’t miss it!  See Mrs. Carlson with any questions.
    .
  • The fall sports season at WMS is underway!  Here’s a rundown of our athletics schedule:  The Cheer Clinic continues TODAY and THURSDAY after school from 2:45 to 4:15 in the Auxilliary gym.  Interested athletes — both girls AND boys — should wear athletic shoes, shorts, and t-shirt, and participants with long hair should wear it pulled back in a high ponytail. The actual TRYOUTS for the Cheer Team will be held next Monday, September 17th. See Ms. Herb for more information.
    .
  • The girls Ultimate Frisbee team will also be practicing after school TODAY in the main gym.  Interested female athletes of ALL experience levels are invited to attend — whether you’re a first-timer or a National Champion! See Mr. Smolinski with any questions.
    .
  • GOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!! Tryouts are under way for the WMS boys soccer team:  7th graders TODAY; and 8th graders on THURSDAY — both on the turf fields from 2:30 to 4. Come dressed and ready to play! See Mr. Witte with any questions.
    .
  • And finally — Tennis team tryouts for both girls and boys are scheduled for this week — 7th AND 8th graders TODAY, and 6th graders on THURSDAY.  Interested athletes should meet at the bus loop after school, where the team bus will transport you to the Yorktown tennis courts. Be sure to bring your racket — and a can of balls if you have one. And if anyone is UNABLE to attend your scheduled tryout day — please contact the coach, Mr. Seeger, about rescheduling.
    .
  • But once again, there is RAIN in the forecast, so athletes should be sure to listen to the announcements AT THE END OF THE DAY for information about cancellations and rescheduling.
